Cannabis dealer jailed for 3 months

A 24-year-old man, Simon Michael, has been sentenced to three months imprisonment, without an option of fine, by a Federal High Court in Lagos after he pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of unlawfully dealing in cannabis sativa (marijuana).
Michael, who resides at a garage located in the Oniru market, was arraigned for unlawfully trading on the restricted narcotic substance.
Justice Saliu Saidu, in her ruling, said: “Since the accused has pleaded guilty to the charge before this honourable court, he is hereby found guilty and convicted as charged.
“The accused is hereby sentenced to three months imprisonment without option of fine.
“The short sentence given to the accused was based on the fact that he had been being in custody since May.”
The prosecutor, Mr. Kingsely Orji, had told the court that the accused was apprehended on May 29 at New Market, Oniru, Lekki, with about 500 gram of cannabis, and was arrested by a team of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, who stormed the arena at 6pm.
“The offence contravened Section 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Act, 2004,” Orji added.
