Security operatives attached to the
convoy of Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Friday morning engaged
a gang of armed robbers in a shoot-out on Enugu-Awka Road.
A security operative told journalists in
Ado-Ekiti, on condition of anonymity, that the governor’s convoy ran into the
armed bandit around 10.25 am.
The source, however, did not disclose whether
the governor was in the convoy or not. But he said that none of the security
personnel was injured in the operation, which forced the robbers to flee from
the scene.
He said the robbers had dispossessed some
motorists of their belongings during the operation and over 500 commuters were
stranded after motorists abandoned their vehicles on the road.
The source said that the bandits
had laid a siege to the road about five kilometers away from Aniocha
village, but he said that over 500 commuters were rescued and led away from the
scene after the security operatives attached to Fayemi had overpowered the
robbers.
It will be recalled that the convoy of
the governor had earlier in the year ran into armed robbers along Lagos-Ibadan
Expressway and dislodged the bandits from the road.
