Five feared dead in Delta’s communal clash


AT LEAST five persons are feared dead in Agbarho community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State following a violent clash between members of the community's Security Task Force and a mob.

Trouble started when the Security Task Force swooped on some youths who were allegedly gambling in the Uwhrughelli road area of the community at about 5pm on Thursday, killing a young man identified as Ovoke Ojo.

Tension heightened as an angry mob, in a reprisal attack descended heavily on the security outfit, beheading, slaughtering and roasting one of them as the others scampered for safety.

Sources said three other persons were allegedly killed by stray bullets from men of the Joint Task Force, (JTF) who have been deployed to the area in an effort to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the area as the JTF and the police in the division were seen patrolling the major streets of the community to restore normalcy to the town which was enveloped with apprehension.

At the time of filing this report, the panic stricken residents of the community had begun to go about their normal businesses.

Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, Mr. Charles Muka while confirming the incident, disclosed that seven persons had been arrested in connection with the matter. Saying that the situation was under control, Muka however said the clash was between the members of the community's security outfit and suspected cultists.
