Gunmen kill policeman attached to Bauchi govt house •As religious crisis claims lives in Taraba

UNKNOWN gunmen, early Sunday morning, shot dead a police inspector attached to the Government House, Bauchi, on Nasarawa road, Bauchi.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the slain police inspector, identified as Babangida Dambaba, was attacked by the assailants while coming from a mosque, where he had offered his early morning prayer, at about 5.40 a.m.
The gunmen, according to a security source who preferred anonymity, fled the scene of the attack as soon as the policeman was shot.
“Babangida was gunned down on his way from the mosque where he had gone to observe his Subuh prayer. He was going home when he met his untimely death,” the source told the Nigerian Tribune.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mallam Mohammed Ladan, confirmed the killing of the police inspector in a telephone interview with journalists.
The death of Babangida brought to 11, the number of policemen so far killed by unknown gunmen in the state from July till date.
In another development, an unknown number of people were, on Sunday, killed in a religious crisis between Christian and Muslim faithful at Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Also churches, mosques, residential buildings, shops and markets were set ablaze during the crisis.
According to an eyewitness, the incident happened when a motorbike rider was attempting to cross a major road, which was blocked by the worshippers.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that attempt to disobey the instruction of the congregation by the motorbike rider allegedly resulted in the crisis.
Although there were casualties, no specific number was confirmed at the time of filing this report.
Residents in the area, especially non-indigenes, were said to have fled to neighbouring Wukari Local Government Area for safety, while security operatives had been drafted to maintain peace and order.
Eefforts to speak with state Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Amos Olaoye, failed as his lines were switched off.
