Lawyers want speedy trial of oil subsidy fraudsters

The Federal Government and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been urged to ensure speedy and conclusive prosecution of high profile corruption cases in the oil industry across the country.
Also, the age-long tradition of strictly using seniority as the yardstick for appointment of chief judges by the National Judicial Council (NJC) should be made to also become the operational law given the teeth by the states’ Houses of Assembly. The Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLAFON) South-West region made these calls after its conference held in Ilorin, in a communiquĂ© signed by its National President, Sunny Akanni, National Secretary, Arome Okwori and South-West regional Coordinator, Obinna Nnameka Okereke.
According to CLAFON, “The Federal Government is urged to look at the Boko Haram and other related security issues and ensure that the overall interest of Nigerians are taken into consideration.
“The bombing of St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Kaduna be urgently investigated and all culprits be made to face the wrath of the law. The Presidency should ensure that all indicted individuals are brought to book.”
CLAFON also requested President Goodluck Jonathan to, as a matter of urgency, sign into law, the Bill for an Act to prohibit same sex marriage and related matters in the country. However, the association commended the Nigerian Police for the speedy and timely arrest of the culprits involved in the University of Port Harcourt’s students’ killings and urged the Rivers State government as well as law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in the prosecution of those already arrested.
