Man sentenced to life for murdering his wife in Bow

A man has today (Wednesday 21 November) been sentenced at the Old Bailey to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of 14 and a half years for the murder of his wife, Rushna Begum in Bow earlier this year.
Sheikh Shahidul Islam (16/11/77 - 35 ys) of Newmill House, Devas Street E3 had previously pleaded guilty on 19 November to murdering his wife at their home.
Police were called at 16:20hrs on Friday, 25 May, following concerns for the occupant of an address at Newmill House, Devas Street E3.
Officers attended and found the body of a 28-year-old woman who was pronounced dead at the scene. She was Rushna Begum, a mother of two young sons.
She was found with three stab wounds; one to the neck and two to her left arm.
The woman's 34-year-old husband was arrested in Bedfordshire later that day and was subsequently charged with her murder.
The post mortem at Poplar Mortuary gave the cause of death as a stab wound to the neck.
Det Insp Pete North of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command said
"This was a violent and despicable crime against his wife who loved him. Islam has not displayed any sign of remorse or compassion throughout the investigation.
"This is demonstrated by the fact that he murdered Rushna whilst their two-year-old son was present in the address and then left him alone with his mother's lifeless body.
"It was only thanks to the concern of family members that he was found over four hours later. The tragedy of Islam's crime is that he has deprived his two children of their mother"
