The exercise, which was supervised by the Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade. The street value of the drugs was put at N13.6bn.
Ofoyeju said the narcotics were 12,543.2kg of cannabis, 76.3kg of heroin, 43.7kg of cocaine, 3.6kg of methamphetamine and 9.1kg of amphetamine, adding that the heroin was hidden in carpets and footballs.
Meanwhile, the Commander of the agency in Ondo State, Mr. Walter Nicholas, on Thursday, said cannabis popularly known as Indian hemp, worth N260m was seized by officers and men of the agency from traffickers in the last two months.
He said the command also arrested 13 suspected drug traffickers.
Nicholas, who stated this at the public display of exhibits seized by the command, added that “most of the seizures were made around Ipele forest in Owo Local Government Area of the state.”
He displayed 18 tons of the illegal drugs, and noted that the command “has always in the past been avoiding to make public the street value of seized drugs in order not to induce people venturing into the nefarious trade.”
Nicholas said the perpetrators had “devised different methods and ways of concealing the illegal products to beat security agents.”
He said, “An interesting factor is the mode of concealment employed by the perpetrators, the extent they have gone and the ingenuity exhibited in order to deceive security agencies represent the highest exhibition of frustration on their part.”
Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who was represented on the occasion by state’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaji Yekini Olanipekun, described the seizure as embarrassing.
He, however, expressed satisfaction with the arrest, saying “this will go a long way to save the future of our youths.”
