State Security Service has said the National
Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency can assist security
agencies in fighting terrorism in the country.
This, the security outfit said, could be done by
sensitising Nigerians to be conscious of their environment.
The SSS added that the partnership with NESREA
would help the country to overcome its present security challenges and engender
socio-economic progress.
Speaking at a forum on environment and longevity
organised by NESREA in collaboration with the International Federation on
Ageing, Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday, the Deputy Director, Public
Relations and Media, SSS, Ms. Marilyn Ogar, said security and safety were
essential for longevity and sustainable economic development.
She said, “It is important that we take good care
of our environment. Nigerians have to be environmentally-conscious and this is
where NESREA can partner with security agencies by sensitising the people to be
vigilant and to care for their environment as well as the elderly among them.”
NESREA Director-General, Mrs. Ngeri Benebo, noted
that the dialogue was to sensitise stakeholders on the impact of environment on
longevity.
Benebo, who described ageing as a normal
phenomenon, said it was no longer possible to ignore it, whether it is viewed
positively or negatively.
According to her, societies today see ageing as a
burden, because such societies do not take the necessary steps to tap from the
blessings that come with growing old.
