Northern Governors condemn General Shuwa's killing

The late Shuwa

NORTHERN States Governors Forum (NSGF) has strongly condemned Friday's killing of the civil war veteran and former member of the Supreme Military Council, General Mamman Shuwa in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Shuwa was gunned down as he was about to go for Juma't prayer.

The NSGF dubbed his killing, one attack too many and urged terrorists across the country to immediately stop their attacks.
Chairman of the forum, the Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, yesterday expressed the forum’s deep condolences to the families of Gen Shuwa as well as families of forty other people reported to have been killed in a similar attack on Thursday night, saying no grievance can justify such dastardly acts against innocent people.

In a statement signed by Aliyu’s Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo, the forum said it is sad that “a committed Nigerian like Gen. Shuwa who gave everything for the unity of the Nigeria could be killed in such a gruesome manner.”

The forum however applauded what it described as the federal government’s acceptance of the offer of negotiation by Boko Haram, hoping that the initiative will usher in peace, security and tranquillity in the country after years of unnecessary bloodletting.

“It is our fervent belief that dialogue, rather than use of force, would help find a lasting solution to the worsening insecurity of lives and property in the country,” the forum stated.

The forum pledged continued cooperation with the Federal Government on the issue of national security.

The NSGF statement prayed God to grant the souls of Gen Shuwa and others who were killed in the attacks eternal rest, and their families as well as the Government of Borno State the fortitude to bear the loss.

Shuwa was killed inside his Gwange 1- Maiduguri home alongside his military guard and a guest. It was gathered that the gunmen who committed the act arrived his home pretending to be guests paying homage to the General before the usual Friday afternoon prayers. “Gwange District, reported to be the hotbed of Boko Haram insurgency, has been abandoned by many of it's residents except some people like the slain retired General.

“Confirming the killing of Shuwa, on Friday, spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Lt. Col. Sagir Musa said: "At about 12 noon today (Friday) at General Muhammadu Shuwa (Rtd) house in Gwange 1 area of Maiduguri metropolis, while the General was seated in his house with some guests, four men initially thought to be his visitors and guests for the Juma’at prayers entered his house and opened fire on the General and his guests.

"One of the guests died on the spot while the General died on the way to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).

"The JTF troops located in the area immediately cordoned off the area and search for the assailants is ongoing to apprehend the terrorists."“"The terrorists that carried out the killing of the late General will be brought to book," he said. “Only on Thursday, the sect spoke about a ceasefire if the government consents to a dialogue to be held in Saudi Arabia.
