Piracy of DSTV: SFU arrests apprentice, technician at Alaba international market


The Special Fraud Unit (SFU) Millerton, Ikoyi Lagos State, in its continuous effort to curb the menace of fraudsters has apprehended some traders at Alaba International Market who allegedly used to engage in acts of piracy.

The Nigerian Compass gathered that a petition was addressed to the Commissioner of Police, SFU by the Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited, the provider of encrypted multi-channel satellite television service known as DSTV, alleging that some individuals were engaged in importing, selling and distributing illicit devices capable of illegally accessing their broadcast signals to unsuspecting members of the public.
 The petition further alleged that the suspects set up contrived equipment to act as gateways which facilitated illegal access by the non MCN devices to DSTV (signal) broadcast signals.

SFU spokes person, ASP Ngozi Isintume-Agu, explained that detectives from the Unit swung into action on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, in charge SFU, Mr. Tunde Ogunshakin and some suspects, Andy John and Ezenwaka Valentine Chukwuka  were arrested at Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos.
Some items suspected to have been used in pirating the intellectual property were recovered as exhibits.

Andy Johnson, 28, an apprentice from Abia State, was arrested in Shop No. “F” 1377 and the items recovered from him are; one strong decoder, 16 open boxes and one UPS.

Ezenwaka Valentine Chukwuka, 42, hails from Anambra State.  He claimed to be a Technician who repairs TVs, LCDs, and DVD.
 He is the owner of Shop No. “73”. 
The items recovered from him are Avatars and Spider which according to him were Receivers for free to air transmission.  Also, a Laptop and Desktop Computers were recovered. 

Investigation is on-going.  Suspects will be charged to court soonest.
