Police mop up arms, arrest 81 kidnappers


Delta State Police Command has embarked on mop up of unlawful and illegal arms in the state, just as 81 kidnap and robbery suspects were rounded-up in the last two months.
Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Asaba, on Thursday, called for useful information which would attract a handsome reward for the recovery of such arms and ammunition.
Mr Aduba said within the period, the command recovered six English riffles, three English pistols, 17 locally-made guns, 1018 ammunition and 57 cartridges.
He blamed most of the kidnap and robbery cases on insider factor, while relating among others, how a traditional ruler in the state lost over N2million withdrawn by one of his aides to robbers as a result of an insider’s information.
The commissioner, who received an award from the Security Watch Africa as the Best Commissioner of Police in West Africa, on Thursday, warned against unruly vigilance groups which used illegal and unlicensed guns, as well as take law into their hands, to have a rethink or face the full wrath of the law.
A vice chairman of Ufuoma Community in Ughelli, he recalled was arrested for kidnapping. Aduba also warned his men, especially the DPOs not to soil their hands in dealing with criminals.
