The National Communication Commission has sealed off the premises of a communication outfit in Akure, Ondo State, for engaging in illegal registration and sale of SIM.
NCC said on Friday that the firm, Sunbifo Nigeria Limited, was allegedly registering SIM cards with fictitious names.
The firm was said to have used photographs in an almanac and sold the registered cards to subscribers at higher prices than what was being sold in the market.
The NCC officials ordered the arrest of two of the company’s workers.
NCC’s Head of Enforcement, Mr. Efosa Idehen, said the commission had been tracing the activities of the company over the time.
He said, “Nine machines being used for illegal registration had been traced to Ondo State and three out of the machines had been traced to the sealed company.
“Those that had been engaging in illegal registration had been frustrating the efforts of the commission to have real data base of GSM subscribers.
“The commission may need to evolve a new policy with service providers to ensure proper registration of GSM service subscribers.”
Idehen said it was an offence for the communication service dealers to sell pre-registered SIM cards to members of the public.
“Under the law, the identity of a holder of a line must be verifiable by the commission,” he said.
