‘Those calling for Okonjo-Iweala’s sack are detractors’

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Transparency in Governance, on Sunday, described those calling for the sack of the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as detractors, who did not want the nation to come out of the mess it is presently facing.
The group also absolved  the minister of  complicity in the N2.3trillion petroleum subsidy fraud which had been a subject of national concern since the beginning of the year.
The national president of the group, Comrade Ibrahim Alih, while speaking in a media chat in Abuja, lamented that it was unfortunate that Dr Okonjo-Iweala was being verbally assaulted by desperate oil barons, bent on tarnishing her  image for the singular reason that she had helped to expose their criminal trade which had seen them amassing  wealth from the nation's treasury.
He questioned the rationale behind the call for Okonjo-Iweala's resignation by the National Anti-Corruption Network at this critical point in time when reports were being considered to fish out the thieves in the oil sector, insisting that the group must be acting the script of some selfish persons behind the scene who were interested in taking over from Okonjo-Iweala as Finance Minister.
He further affirmed that Okonjo-Iweala had brought her experience and expertise to bear in the management of the nation’s treasury because since her assumption of duties as Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Nigeria had witnessed drastic reduction of stealing from the treasury.
He further noted that this was a welcome development that should be applauded and not the bashing of her  reputation.
