Vigilante group burns five to death in Lagos

Barely months after four University of Port Hacourt (UNIPORT) students were killed, leading to public outcry, another set of five men, suspected to be robbers, have allegedly been set ablaze at Mushin area of Lagos State.

The men, believed to be innocent, were said to have been set on fire by a vigilante group.

The five people were killed early yesterday morning around Challenge Bus Stop in Mushin.

A source told the Nigerian Compass that the incident occurred at the wee hours of the morning, at about 4am.

The Nigerian Compass heard that the victims were strolling along Vono area of Challenge in Mushin, when they were suddenly confronted by vigilante men in the area.

The young men on being accosted by the vigilante men, immediately took to their heels, compelling the group to chase after them.

Hoodlums who usually sleep around the area were also said to run after the victims.

When they were finally caught up with they were beaten and before reason could prevail they had been set on fire.

Residents of the area who witnessed the incident, alerted the police.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “There are some of us, who condemned this action of burning these men. We heard that it was not as if the people were caught at any scene of robbery or that they were arrested with any arms and ammunition recovered from them.”

Another resident who pleaded anonymity however insisted that the burnt victims were armed robbers and that they had attempted to run away, when they were arrested.

"We heard that they went to rob late last night [Saturday] and when they saw the vigilante members they escaped from the scene of the robbery but were arrested by boys in the area.  Police had begun investigations into the botched armed robbery operation and the killing of the men."

The resident also said that the burnt suspect were known in the area and that they had for long been terrorising residents of Challenge area in Mushin

Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, insisted that she had not been briefed about the matter.
