Violence continues in Taraba

Violent clashes which erupted among communities in Ibi Local government area of Taraba state yesterday entered its second day.

The development which has so far claimed several lives, with properties worth millions of naira destroyed, has compelled the state government to imposed a 24 - hour curfew in the entire local government area .

Speaking to newsmen, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Amos Olaoye (DSP) said the ugly incident started when some youths decided to block routes leading to some of the churches on Sunday for security reasons.

It was further gathered that the action did not go down well with some members of the community who felt their movement was being restricted.

The Police Public Relations Officer who explained that armed policemen and soldiers from the Takum Army Barrack have been drafted to the scene, condemned the action of the rioters.

He disclosed that the state government has also extended the 12- hour curfew to 24 hours to enable security agents bring the situation under control.

Only yesterday, our correspondent gathered that the decision the state government to extend the curfew to 24 hours may not be unconnected with recent discovery of some youths who were said to have laid ambush at a nearby stream, but resumed attacks soon after the 12 hour curfew had elapsed.

As at the time of filing this report, it was reliably gathered that most residents of the area have fled for safety.

Reports also say the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Dikko has directed the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 12, Alhaji Mohammed Yabo to relocate to the trouble spot until normalcy return to the area.
