We didn’t kill General Shuwa –Boko Haram

The radical Boko Haram sect has denied responsibility for last Friday killing of  retired General Mamman Shuwa in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Gen Shuwa, a civil war veteran and former member of the Supreme Military Council (SMC) during the military junta was killed in his house at Gwange 1 Maiduguri by gunmen.

According to the Joint Task Force (JTF), four gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members appeared at Shuwa’s residence as guests and subsequently opened fire on him gunning him down, adding “One of the guests died on the spot while the General died on the way to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.”

However, in a telephone conference addressed yesterday in Maiduguri by Mohammed Ibn Abdulaziz, one of the sect commanders, who has been speaking on its behalf in recent time, the Boko Haram sect said it was not responsible for the killing, even as it warned those putting the killing at its doorstep to desist from doing so.

“We heard that people were saying that we had hand in the killing of Gen Shuwa. I want the people to know that we didn’t have any problem with the man. We don’t have anything against him. He was a respected person and has not offended us in any way.

We have no hand in his killing. We were even surprised when we heard about the incident. We want to warn those who are using our names to do this thing to stop and we also warn those who are also spreading the rumour that Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad killed Gen Shuwa to stop it because we are not the one that did it,” Abdulaziz insisted.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 25 suspected Boko Haram militants have been arrested by the Kano Police Command over the killing of a police officer in Kano last Saturday.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who confirmed the arrest, said the attack occurred at the Unguwar-Ukwu area of the city shortly after the Saturday monthly environmental sanitation.

According to sources, the slain officer was observing the environmental sanitation when the gunmen on a motor bike struck.

The gunmen allegedly shot into the air several times, before hitting their target in the head, according to sources who disclosed that the area was thrown into confusion as soon as the attackers stormed the area and started shooting indiscriminately.

The gun men were said to have fled the scene after shooting and killing the officer, while residents immediately alerted the police of the attack.
