Niger State Sector command of the Federal Road
Safety Corps (FRSC) said it recorded a total of 248 deaths while 1,210
others sustained varying degrees of injuries from road crashes between
January and November 2012.
Corps Commander, Mr. David Usman, who disclosed this in an interview in Minna, on Thursday, said the command’s department of Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) has been working to ensure that the number of deaths on roads are reduced to the barest minimum.
The command, he said, has embarked on enlightenment campaigns on the relevance of using helmets by motorcyclists, particularly within Minna metropolis, and this, according to him, helped in reducing the number of casualties on the highways across the state .
Mr. Usman said the command made it clear, particularly to commercial motorcycle riders in Niger State, that it was an offence to ride their motor bikes without putting on helmets as he had advised them to “save their lives and that of others, particularly their passengers by adhering to all safety rules.”
