60-yr-old woman, granddaughter murdered in Abeokuta

TRAGEDY struck in the early hours of Monday morning in Ajiko compound, Ago-Oba area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when a 60-year old woman, Madam Amoke Monsuru and her two-year-old granddaughter, identified as Balqis, were murdered by yet-to-be identified persons.

The death of the duo still remained a mystery to residents of the area, as the Nigerian Tribune gathered that the assailants broke into the one-bedroom apartment of the victims while they were in a sleep and hit their heads with iron rod.

The deceased were said to reside in a storey building within the compound, which would be partly affected by the on-going demolition exercise by the government in the town.

When the Nigerian Tribune visited the scene of the incident on Monday morning, the lifeless bodies of the victims were found on the floor while blood littered the room.

The men of the Nigerian Police from Ibara Divisional Headquarters were at the scene and took  the bodies of the victims for autopsy.

Their remains were later handed over to the family for burial while those arrested and interrogated were later released.

The children of the deceased, Saburi and Hakeeb Moshood, expressed shock over the development.

The duo had travelled from Ibadan on Monday morning to Abeokuta, unaware of the calamity that befell them.

While speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, they, however, claimed to have come to Abeokuta for the re-burial of their paternal grandmother whose graveside would be affected by the demolition exercise for road expansion.

They said, “we arrived the family home, without any foreknowledge of the killing, but we started suspecting foul about the way and manner people of the area were greeting us. We went straight to our mother’s room, and sadly we found her lifeless body and of the grandchild on the floor.

“The police came, discovered the iron rod used to kill them, took it away as exhibit, and also took away the corpses, which were later released for us for burial, and we have since buried them.”
