Man hacks mother to death in Kwara

Tragedy occurred in Isanlu-Isin Kwara State on Friday, when a middle-aged man, Taye Ibiwoye, allegedly clubbed his mother to death with an axe.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the deceased, identified as Sarah Ibiwoye, who was said to be in her late 60s, died instantly from the attack which shattered her skull.
The community was further thrown into mourning when another elderly woman, simply identified as ‘Iya Eleja’ slumped and died, when the news of Sarah’s death was broken to her.
It was learnt that the accused was mentally sick and had been receiving treatment for some time.
Some sources who preferred anonymity, said Ibiwoye had told the police, who had come to arrest him from Oke-Onigbin Police Station, that his mother was behind his travails.
He was also said to have told the policemen that while his brothers were living comfortably, he was rotting away in abject poverty because of his mother’s action.
A relation to Iya Eleja, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the woman was hale and hearty before the incident.
“We have just come back from Omu-Aran, where we went to buy the woman’s coffin. There was nothing wrong with Iya Eleja; she was hale and hearty before the news was broken to her. Immediately the news of the incident was narrated to her, she slumped and died,” the source said.
The Divisional Police Officer of the police station, Olutekunbi Ekundayo, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, told NAN that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department headquarters in Ilorin for investigation.
He said, “There is not much we can do here as far as this case is concerned, particularly as regards the issue of the accused person’s state of health.
“Though it was a case of a culpable homicide, but as you can see, I am preparing the file for the transfer of the case to the state CID for appropriate investigation.”
