The National Youth
Leader, Action Congress of Nigeria, Miriki Ebikibina, has faulted the
Inspector-General of Police, Abubakar Mohammed, for exonerating his men
of alleged shoddy investigation in the murder case of Olaitan Oyerinde,
Principal Private Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
Oshiomhole had on
Thursday, during the launch of a new code of conduct for the Nigeria
Police accused the Deputy Inspector-General, Force CID, Peter Gana, and
other investigating officers of bungling the investigation into
Oyerinde’s murder.
He said the police had a hand in the gruesome murder of his former principal secretary.
Abubakar on Friday
dismissed Oshiomhole’s allegations and said he would fully respond to
the governor’s allegation “at the appropriate time and in due course.”
Ebikibina however called for sanctioning of the affected police officers.
He said, “The ineptitude
of the police command is a shame. The IGP ought to have placed the DIG
on suspension and set up a thorough investigation panel to unravel the
serious allegations the governor raised against the police
“It is saddening and
unacceptable for the IGP, whose command, after almost one year, was
unable to unmask the real killers of Oyerinde, to defend and engage the
governor in an exchange of words.
“It is not only a disservice to the ethics of the police profession, but a clear demonstration of corruption.”
According to Ebikibina, ACN was in support of the call for the immediate sacking of the DIG.
“We call on the IGP to take the bull by the horn and stop playing politics with Oyerinde’s death,” he added.
