TWO suspected members of a six-man robbery gang were, in the early hours
of Tuesday, gunned down by policemen from Oyo State command, while one
of the robbers was arrested when they attempted to escape police
barricade.
This happened even as eight other robbery suspects
were paraded at the Eleyele headquaters of the Oyo State police command
by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Mbu Joseph Mbu, for their alleged
involvement in various robbery operations.
While addressing
journalists, Mr Mbu said the command received an information that a gang
of robbers had snatched a car in Osogbo, Osun State, and were on their
way to Ibadan.
He added that he directed his men, comprising
Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Skynet operatives, to lay ambush
and block the road along the area described to him.
The police
commissioner stated further that immediately the robbers got to the
barricade, they started shooting, to which the police responded, also
firing two cannisters of teargas into their midst.
Mr Mbu said two of the suspected robbers were hit by bullets and died instantly, while one of them was injured.
He
said the police recovered one AK-47 rifle, two localy-made guns, one
automatic Marakov pistol, 14 rounds of 0.900mm ammunition and five
catridges from the suspects.
Among other robbery suspects paraded
were two members of a car-snatching syndicate, which snatched a Honda
CRV from a member of the state House of Assembly.
Mr Mbu said his
men went to Abuja based on information gathered and were able to
recover the vehicle at a car stand owned by a notorious car dealer on
the wanted list of the police.
