Truck kills NURTW official, injures 8 others in Ibadan

A member of the Oyo State council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), identified as Wasiu, was on Tuesday crushed to death by an articulated vehicle in Ibadan.

The vehicle, with the registration number (Jigawa) XC 594 GML, laden with tens of tonnes of cement, was heading for Ife Road at the popular Bola Ige Market in Gbagi when it veered off the road and crushed Wasiu, who was collecting union levy from commercial vehicles picking passengers on the roadside.

Eyewitnesses told the Nigerian Tribune that eight other persons, five of whom were occupants of a taxi that was crushed beyond recognition, were wounded in the tragedy.

One of them, who preferred anonymity, said the accident must have been caused by brake failure as a result of which the driver lost control of the truck and trampled on the casualties.

In the rammed taxi was a Geography cover notebook with the name Waheed Toyin, suggesting that one of the occupants of the car might have been a student.

The injured were said to have been taken to an unknown hospital, after which they were said to have been referred to another hospital by the medical team at the Remi Babalola Red Cross Clinic, Gbagi, because of the enormity of the injuries they sustained.

Efforts by the Nigerian Tribune to get the head of the police detachment at the scene was rebuffed by the security operatives who yelled at the reporter, saying “go away, I don’t want you here.”
