Niger Delta Elders’ Forum has warned that the
region may not back President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 general elections
if he fails to develop the area.
The forum stated that the people would not be
fooled to vote for Jonathan if he refused to take steps towards addressing the
developmental challenges in the region.
In a statement by its Chairman, Etubong
Duke, and Secretary, Mr. Nelson Baribote, the forum observed that the
South-South geopolitical zone was faced with more socio-economic hardship than ever
before.
The forum expressed regret that though it showed
confidence in the ability of President Jonathan to deliver on his election
promises, it had begun to wonder whether the problems affecting the region were
glaring to the President.
The forum said, “We have seen that the president
and his ministers are more interested in the 2015 agenda than the welfare of
the people.
“We wish to state, however, that this time
around, Niger Deltans will not be fooled to vote for Jonathan unless he takes
practical steps to address our developmental challenges in the region without
prejudice to other areas.”
