Septuagenarian grandmother, 11-year old grandson killed in Ibadan night inferno

IT was gnashing of teeth and uncontrollable wailing in Ibadan at the weekend when a 72-year-old grand mother and her 11-year-old grandson were burnt to death in a night fire disaster, the cause of which was as at the time of filing this report, still unknown.
The night tragedy struck in the two-room apartment at Abolade community of Omi-Adio in the Ido Local Government area of Oyo state, where Mrs Olubisi Anike Nihinlola and Waris Ajasa fell victim of the sad event, but the 13-year old grand daughter, Latifat Ajasa, survived with high degree of burns.
Many sympathisers including families of the victims of the inferno and members of the community couldn't hold back tears when the charred bodies of the victims were retrieved from the fire.
The only survivor of the incident, which was noticed at about 11 p.m, Latifat, was said to have been rescued by some bold neighbours who responded quickly to the cries of help from the occupants of the building.
At the Emiloju Hospital located at Agbatomi, Teachers' Quarters, Omi-Adio, Ibadan, where the only survivor of the fire outbreak was admitted, Latifat was seen wrapped with gut bandage on the bed, but was said to have been responding to treatment.
According to the nurse on duty, Mr Olarewaju Opeyemi, Latifat was brought to the hospital on Friday night around 12 pm with severe burns on her legs, face and other parts of her body.
"We thank God she is responding very well to treatment and her condition, as you can see, is very stable now" , Opeyemi told Nigerian Compass.
It was serious grief for Mrs Ajasa, who lost her 72-year old mother and 11-year old son to the fire as she said she was at a vigil service where she was worshipping when her apartment went up in flames.
Ajasa's landlord , Pa Amusa Okegbemi, who narrowly escaped death in the fire, was rescued by neighbours after forcing the door to the house open.
According to him, "I heard a strange sound from the main parlour. Then I decided to check the corridor where I discovered that everywhere was full of smoke and flames. I cried loud for help before the door was forced open and I was rescued from the ugly situation by neighbours," the landlord pitifully recounted.
