65-year-old grandmother macheted to death

THERE is palpable tension at Arikuyeri, a sleepy community in Lagelu Local government area of Oyo State following the murder of a 65-year-old woman, Mrs Moladun Abisoye, a.k.a. Iya L’ariku by unknown assailants on Friday evening at about 8p.m.
Mrs Abisoye, who was reportedly with two of her grandchildren, Sefiat and Quadri, was said to be taking her farm products to a roadside shop opposite the local government secretariat Iyana Offa in preparation for a regular market day that was to come up on Saturday.
Her killers who were suspected to have hid themselves in the bush, reportedly came out, using the dark night as cover, and macheted the elderly woman at the back of her neck.
Mrs Abisoye immediately fell down with the load of banana pods she was carrying writhing with pain in her own blood, and was said to have died shortly after.
Her grandchildren, who could not see the assailants very well, was said to have raised the alarm which brought the residents of the community out of their homes.
By the time they came out, the assailants were said to have melted into the dark night, but the deceased’s relations said they suspected one Femi, a resident of the community, as being their mother’s killer.
One of the grandchildren, who was walking ahead of the deceased, told Sunday Tribune that she heard a gurgling sound and when she looked back, she saw her grandmother on the ground while a figure in a white long gown ran into the bush.
The second child, Quadri, who told Sunday Tribune that he was walking behind his grandmother, said the deceased suddenly let out a cry in the dark, after which she fell down.
When Sunday Tribune visited the community on Saturday, the residents were seen in front of the community leader’s house, mourning the loss of the deceased who was described as a kind-hearted woman well-loved by many.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested two men who were fingered by the children of the deceased and suspected to have been responsible for their mother’s death.
One of the suspects, whose name was simply given as Femi, was alleged to be quarrelsome and had had riffs with the children of the deceased, which had caused disaffection between them.
He was alleged to have sought the support of his friend to perpetrate the act, but Femi denied knowledge of the killing.
The community leader, Chief Gbolagade Kiladese, confirmed Femi’s reported notoriety, saying that he had at a time told his landlady to evict him from her house so that there would be peace, but which the woman refused to do.
Chief Kiladese said he had already fixed a meeting for today, Sunday, between his executive council and the aggrieved parties so that the issues could be resolved, only for him to be called that Mrs Abisoye had been murdered.
Femi was reported to have a case pending in one of the courts in Ibadan over the assault of a woman who was a co-tenant in a house from which he had to be evicted.
The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Indabawa, confirmed the report of the murder case, saying that he had ordered the case to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, for further investigations.
