Heavy shootings rock Lagos as police, bank robbers clash


Teams of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos State Police Command, today (Friday) clashed with an eight-man- gang of bank robbers, foiling robbery of a new generational bank at the Abule Egba area of the metropolis.
The bandits who were said to have stormed the bank in the afternoon, bolted after a gun duel with policemen, abandoning sophisticated looking arms and ammunition, five AK47 rifles and different varieties of charms.
A police source said: “The armed robbers were defeated   by the combined efforts of teams of operatives attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command and officers and men of Area 'G' Command headquarters, Ogba, Lagos. The teams were led by the Area ‘G’ Commander, Mr. Abdullahi Ishola, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).”
It was further heard that the eight - man gang, who must had been acting based on insiders' information, had around 2:30pm, yesterday attacked the bank.
When the robbers caught sight of the policemen, they immediately opened fire, forcing motorists, passersby to scamper for safety.
Some eye witnesses described the gun battle as very fierce, lasting for more than an hour.
The policemen engaged bandits before Isola and others stormed the scene and overpowered the robbers.

At the end of the gun battle, all the eight members of the robbery gang were arrested, while five AK-47 rifles and a yet to be estimated number of ammunitions recovered from the gang.
Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide confirmed the incident, adding that two operational vehicles of the robbers were also recovered. Braide explained that the robbers had been taken to the SARS office Ikeja, for further investigation.
