Activist accuses police of shielding Oyerinde’s killers

Olaitan Oyerinde

Executive Director, Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice, Rev. David Ugolor, on Thursday accused the Inspector- General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, of shielding those who killed Olaitan Oyerinde.
Oyerinde was the Principal Private Secretary to  the Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, before he was killed a year ago.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Ugolor, who had earlier been detained by the police in connection with the murder, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to intervene and order the IG to reopen the case.
He said, “The only way we can end impunity in Nigeria is to bring people to justice. The earlier the president intervenes, the better for this country.”
Blaming insurgency in the country on “high-level of impunity”, Ugolor, accused the police of implicating him in the murder by torturing suspects to confess that he was the one that killed Oyerinde.
According to him, the police under the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Peter Gana and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DC Ezekiel, “used torture to extract statement from those they connived with to implicate me.”
He added, “To end the culture of impunity in this country, Peter Gana and his co-investigators should be brought to justice.”
Ugolor, however, described the ruling of the Court of Appeal, Benin which ordered the Police to pay him N5m for illegal detention as “a victory for the people”.
Commending Oshiomhole for the successful conduct of the April 20 council poll in the state, Ugolor appealed to aggrieved parties to go to tribunal instead of resorting to violence.
