Gunmen behead Berom man in Jos •How gunmen killed 10, injured 12 in Adamawa

The peace initiatives by security agencies in Plateau State and other stakeholders to end the incessant crises between the Fulani and the native Berom in the northern part of the state suffered a setback at the weekend with the killing of a man who was beheaded.
It will be recalled that the northern part of Plateau State, mostly Barakin-Ladi Riyom and some parts of Jos South Local Government areas, have been in crisis occasioned by frequent clashes, leading to the death of several people on both sides.
Security agencies, especially the police and the Special Task Force (JTF) in charge of security in the state, along with the senator  representing the northern part of the state, Senator Gyang Pwajok, in the past three weeks, held several peace meetings with the representatives of the two warring groups with the aim of bringing about peace and total reconciliation.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that at a meeting called at the instance of the Senator representing the senatorial district on Saturday in Riyom Local Government, the representatives of Fulani, Berom and both Christian and Muslim clergymen agreed to prevail on their subjects to embrace peace.
It was however, gathered that few hours after the peace talk, a Berom man who came out of his house to ease himself at about 4:30 a.m. was killed by some gunmen who invaded Gyel in Jos South Local Government Area of the state and beheaded him.
A source close to the scene of the incident told the Nigerian Tribune that immediately they killed the man, the assailants disappeared with his head and released several shots into the air to scare other people living within the vicinity from coming out of their respective houses.
According to the source, the people of the area were shocked that such a dastardly incident could occurr  when there were moves by stakeholders to address the lingering crisis in the northern part of the state.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Felicia Anslem, confirmed the unfortunate incident, saying the police had commenced investigation into the killing.
“We are aware of the incident, the police have commenced full investigation into the incident. I cannot say anything now, because investigation is going on,” she said.
Meanwhile, The spate of killings in Adamawa State continued unabated last Sunday as unknown gunmen unleashed terror on Jilang Village in Maiha Local Government Area, leaving 10 persons dead, while 12 others sustained various degrees of injury after the dastardly act.
A reliable source who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune in Yola said the gunmen stormed the EYN Church at about 11.00 a.m. while church service was still on.
“The gunmen entered the church while the sermon was on and started shooting at the people who were listening to the preacher,” the source said.
According to the source, who said he was almost killed during the attack, the incident came as a shock to the faithful inside the church when the attackers came in two Toyota Hilux vans.
He said 10 dead bodies were seen after the attack and 12 persons sustained different degrees of injury.
“Is it wrong to go to church or worship God? Since I was born, I have not come face to face with death like this. These men just entered the church and started killing people without any justification. Blood is everywhere,” he said.
The incident was a repeat of the attack that took place early January in 2012, where some unknown gunmen stormed the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), in Jimeta-Yola, the state capital, resulting in the killing of nine persons inside the church while some of them sustained injury.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Adamawa State police command, DSP Ibrahim Mohammed disclosed the unknown gunmen killed six persons the market square and four people were also killed at EYN Church in the village, while nine persons were seriously injured as a result of the attack.
The police command said it had since deployed personnel to the area where the incident happened  for further investigation.
