The Lagos
State Police Command have arrested a Lebanese man for orchestrating the kidnap
of his aunt and demanding a ransom of N100 million.
The suspect,
Mohammed Dannawi told journalists that he planned the kidnapped of his
61-year-old aunt, Essa Dannawi, not because of the ransom, but because he
wanted to punish her just as she had punished him and his wife.
He however
would not state how Essa punished him and his wife, to have warranted the kidnapping
of his aunt.
Apparently
determined to teach his aunt a lesson, Mohammed planned the kidnap with his
aunt’s former staff, Obi Kwentua.
According to
Mohammed, he made a spare key to his aunt’s duplex and gave the key to Kwentua.
Kwentua gave
the key to one Tee-boy, who arranged with four other men and fixed a day for
the kidnapping.
On the
appointed, Mohammed was conveniently not home. The gang, which had lodged at a
hotel adjacent to the home of Essa, scaled the fence that divided the hotel
from the victim’s home.
The woman’s
security guards were said to have fled after they saw that the men were armed
to the teeth. Essa was taken away.
According to
police, the kidnappers demanded for N100 million, but the money was beaten down
to N4million.
Mohammed
however insisted that it was not N100 million they demanded, but N15 million.
Police
spokesperson, Ngozi Braide however stated that on May 2, 2013, Essa was kidnapped at her residence, at Ebute
Metta West Lagos State.
The case was
transferred to Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS), Ikeja on May 6 and Officer in charge of SARS, SP.
Abba Kyari arrested members of the family and staff, since experience had shown
that most kidnapping were carried out by those who are close to the victims.
After an
extensive interview with all the arrested parties, useful information was
gathered and Mohammed, a nephew and staff of the victim was detained.
Braide said:
“Upon interrogation, Mohammed confessed to
have organized the kidnapping of his aunt because she offended him.
Thereafter, SARS detectives, led by Kyari immediately used him to stage and
arrested the leader of the kidnappers, Obi Kwentua.
“At Rita
Lori Hotel Surulere, where he came to collect N4m ransom, which he demanded
from relatives if the victim eventually the victim was rescued at their hide
out in Oyingbo area of Lagos State.”
It was
gathered that after Mohammed opened up to investigators, the men had gone and
arrested several family members of Tee-boy. When the suspect realized that the
heat and tension was high, he and other member of the gang were said to have
bundled Essa to a particular area and released her.
In an
attempt to arrest Kwentua, the police released Mohammed and went home and
embarked on his routine, like he had no care in the world. Kwentua was fooled
into believing that Mohammed had been left off the hook. He was unaware that police were trailing and
monitoring Mohammed’s every move.
Police are
presently hunting for Tee-boy.
