2 Men Bag 200 Days Imprisonment For Stealing Cows

An Abuja Senior Magistrate Court yesterday sentenced two men to 200 days imprisonment for stealing two cows belonging one ShehuIdris, a resident of Idu Industrial Area, Abuja.
Peter Hankuri, 35, and Jibrin Onuh, 30, both of Angwan Rogo Village, Abuja, were convicted on a two count-charge of joint act and theft by Senior Magistrate AbdullahiIllelah.
Illelah, however, gave them an option to pay N7, 000 fine each after they pleaded guilty to the offence.
The prosecutor, Mr. Simon Emmanuel, had told the court that Idris had reported the case to the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on May 29.
Emmanuel told the court that both convicts and two others now at large, entered the complainants’ house and stole two of his cows.
He said the convicts were arrested with the cows while conveying them in a Pick-up van, with registration number XA 552 NBS, to Jabi, Abuja, for sale.
The first accused, Hankuri pleaded with the court for mercy, saying that he is married with three children.
``I will not do it again, it is the work of the devil’’, he told the court.
The second accused, Onuh also admitted to the offence and sought for mercy, claiming that he was jobless and has four children.
The magistrate, in his judgment, said that being jobless was not a reason to commit crime and advised the convicts to engage in menial jobs to earn a decent living and feed their families.
``The act of theft has become very rampant in the FCT and as such I hereby sentenced both accused to 200 days imprisonment with an option of N7,000 fine.’’
He said that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to commit similar offence.
