JTF arrests prime suspect in Bayelsa policemen’s murder

The Joint task Force in the Niger Delta has arrested the mastermind of the ambush and killing of 11 Policemen at Azuzuama, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on April 5.
In a ceremony yesterday, in Yenagoa, the JTF gave the name of the suspect as Jackson Fabouwei, who, they said, had made useful confession.
At the event, Col, Farouk Yahaya, Chief of Staff to the Commander of the JTF, Major General Bata Debiro, disclosed that the suspect was arrested on Thursday at Ekibri, near Azuzuama, in the same local government area the crime was committed.
According to him, the JTF and other security agencies had been working seriously since the killing of the policemen on April 5 2013 so as to track them down and bring them to justice.
He said the JTF had conducted series of operations around Lobia, Ukbie, Ezetu, Ekeni and Azuzuama, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area to hunt down the suspected killers.
Debiro said during the operations arrests were made and criminal hideouts were destroyed, while weapons were recovered. The operation, he pointed out, destabilised the criminals in the area,  coupled with the deployment of troops to the area some of the alleged killers fled.
Checks indicated that intelligence officers of the JTF had been on the trail of Fabouwei, who was eventually arrested while trying to relocate.  Debiro attributed his arrest to sound intelligence gathering by the JTF and other security agencies, adding that the suspect would be handed over to the police for further interrogation and prosecution.
He gave assurance that the JTF and other security agencies were on the trail of all the alleged killers of the policemen.  Meanwhile, Fabouwei, in an interview, narrated how they carried out the killing of the policemen.
He explained that he was forced to carry out the killing when other members of the gang pointed a gun at him.  According to him, being a surveillance contractor, he had a G10 rifle, adding that former members of a militant camp met him and complained bitterly of how their former boss used and abandon them.
He said the aggrieved boys went to the house of their former boss and were able to steal some weapons and ammunition.  Fabouwei, who claimed he is from Azuzuama, said he was with the aggrieved boys when the corpse of a member of their boss was being taken away, with police escort boat.
He stated that despite his pleadings, the other six boys opened fire and shot at the policemen killing them.  After killing them, he said, one of the boys he identified as General Virus said because of what their boss did to them they would burn the bodies, which they did.
