UNIBEN student’s killing: DPO’s husband exonerates wife

Husband of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ogida Police Station in Benin City, Mrs Carol Afegbai, who was accused of killing one Ibrahim Momodu, a final year student of the University of Benin, Mr Adams Afegbai, has stated that his wife is not the person who pulled the trigger that took the life of the student.
Providing insight into what transpired and how the late Momodu lost his life on May 27, Mr Afegbai, who is a retired police officer, told journalists in Benin City, on Monday that, “it is not true at all that my wife shot the boy. My wife, as the DPO, was moving round to see her men who were on duty and she came there in her car.
She was by the (car) steering when she saw the police officers interrogating a rider of an unregistered motorcycle.
“Another boy was also sitting as a passenger behind. My wife, sitting inside her car, noticed that the boy was opening a bag and bringing out a gun. When she sighted the gun, she shouted to the police officers that the boy was carrying a gun. As she jumped down, a policeman shot at him (the boy), adding that my wife did not shoot at anybody.”
Mr Afegbai explained that whatever was done on that  day was done in self defence, saying that otherwise, “they would have killed a policeman.”
While noting that there was nothing wrong with the re-deployment of his wife, he disclosed that the policeman who allegedly fired the shot that killed the student was now in “protective” detention.
Mr Afegbai, therefore, appealed to the Edo State government and the police authorities to ensure that justice was done in the case since it had been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.
