Helpline for drug addicts in Nigeria

Helpline for drug addicts in Nigeria
  • Mothers urged to monitor their kids

“Illicit drug use among teenagers remains high, largely due to increasing popularity of marijuana. Rising marijuana use reflects changing perceptions and attitudes. Historically, as perception of risks goes down, use goes up (and vice versa).
“Young people are showing less disapproval of marijuana use and decreased perception that marijuana is dangerous. The growing perception of marijuana as a safe drug may reflect recent public discussions over “medical marijuana” and movements to legalize the drug for adult recreational use in some states.”
The above information was gleaned from National Institute on Drug Abuse website. This growing perception among youngsters that some illicit drugs are safe probably was one of the factors that forced the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ahmadu Giade, to reveal on June, 26, 2014, the war being waged against drug abuse and present a helpline for addicts.
Giade assured people struggling with substance abuse that there was hope of breaking free from drug addiction. Addressing drug addicts across the nation, Giade said: “I present to you today a message of hope, that drug use disorders are preventable and treatable.” He said that NDLEA has drug abuse prevention experts who carry out enlightenment programmes in schools, markets and work places.
There are also counselors who assist drug dependent persons to overcome drug use and addiction. Counseling services are available in all NDLEA 36 State offices and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. He further said: “In 2013 alone, a total of 3,271 drug dependent persons were successfully counselled in NDLEA facilities nationwide. This comprises of 3,062 males and 209 females. We also received report of 802 treated cases from hospitals and other drug dependence treatment centres in Nigeria.”

Deadly Ebola virus 'could spread globally' after plane brings it to Nigeria

  • Health experts fear other passengers could now be carrying the virus
  • It lays dormant in victims for up to three weeks - and 90 per cent die of it
  • Comes after Dr Kent Brantly, who went to fight the disease, was infected

An outbreak of Ebola could spread worldwide after an infected plane passenger introduced the deadly virus to Nigeria, health experts warned last night.

Previous outbreaks were confined to forests and rural areas, but this one has already spread across four countries in West Africa, killing 672 – the disease’s biggest death toll.
The news came as it emerged that an American doctor working for a charity in Liberia had become infected.
Dr Kent Brantly, 33, from Texas, had moved to the country for the Samaritan’s Purse organisation with his children and wife, Amber, to help contain the disease.
More than 1,000 others have been infected by the virus, which can go unnoticed for three weeks and kills 90 per cent of victims.
The outbreak started in Guinea in February and spread to neighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone in weeks.

After an air traveller brought it to Nigeria, health experts now fear infected air passengers who do not realise they have the virus could spread it around the world.

9 Must-Know Facts About The Ebola Virus Spreading Across West Africa

The deadliest outbreak of Ebola in history is still ravaging countries in West Africa, particularly Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. And the troubling news continues with the recent report that the head doctor treating patients with Ebola in Sierra Leone, virologist Sheik Umar Khan, has himself contracted the virus, and is now being treated by doctors from the organization Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).

The virus is notoriously deadly, causing a severe viral hemorrhagic fever, and has so far killed 60 percent of people infected by it in this West Africa outbreak. Here’s what is known about Ebola virus disease -- formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever -- including how it's spread and why it's so deadly:

The first human outbreaks of Ebola on record occurred in Sudan and Zaire in 1976.
The virus is named after the Ebola River in Africa. There have been other outbreaks reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Ivory Coast, Uganda, South Sudan, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, Guinea and Liberia, according to CNN.

There are five known strains of the virus.
They are named after their outbreak locations: Ebola-Zaire, Ebola-Sudan, Ebola-Côte d’Ivoire, Ebola-Reston, and Ebola-Bundibugyo, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. The outbreak currently affecting West Africa is the Zaire strain of ebolavirus -- which is also the most deadly of the five. Ebola-Reston, by contrast, is asymptomatic in humans.

    Cursed with banging housemaids

I’m not a guy, so I can’t possibly understand or comprehend what makes a guy noses after a female.
I don’t understand why a guy does stupid things and take crazy chances because he wants to sample a particular honey.
Just saying it’s sexual chemistry…sexual attraction makes it too simplistic.
I mean, why would a guy want to cane his house help when he has a lovely, attractive wife at home?
Why would a guy want to disrespect his wife by foraging through the wilder shores of their maid’s forestry?
I heard what you’re saying. You’re saying that the wife could be a shit of a wife.
I know, but if you must cheat on your wife, why choose your house help of all people?

My Abuja airport encounter with DSS —Ezekwesili

MRS Obiageli Ezekwesili, Nigeria's former Minister of Education and a leading #BringBackOurGirls campaigner, has spoken about her Monday encounter with the security operatives at the Abuja International Airport.
On her way to London, to attend the BBC Hardtalk programme, to further her campaign on the release of kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls, Ezekwesili said she was, on "orders from above," delayed and harassed by Department of State Security (DSS) operatives for over 40 minutes.

On Tuesday, in London, Ezekwesili, a trustee of the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, narrated her ordeals during her visit to the association members in London, as contained in a statement by the CANAN Executive Director, Pastor Laolu Akande:
“I arrived at the airport yesterday (on Monday) to travel to London on British Airline. First, after the luggage screening section, I moved to the Customs people, sitting right next to it and do a more thorough bag search. Rather than they handling my luggage as is the practice, there were three SSS men, who rudely took over before they could do so, and ordered me to open my bag.
“I was travelling light, with just my hand luggage leather roll on and my computer bag. I placed the bag for them (to see) and one was already furiously frisking through it when the Customs advised that a woman be allowed to do it. She was allowed and she did it.
“She finished, zipped up the luggage and they said I could proceed. But I asked that the computer bag be also searched, and they did.

Police: Couple killed by suspects hired for chores

A retired Philadelphia couple was strangled by two men hired to do household chores after the wife caught one trying to steal money, authorities said Monday.
Rufus and Gladys Perry, who relatives said had been married more than 40 years, knew one of their alleged assailants and ended up being killed for $120 and a gold necklace, according to police.
"For it to be someone that they're familiar with, someone that they knew, makes the pain even greater," said Donald Carlton, the couple's nephew.
Terry Ballard, 26, of Philadelphia, and Justen Smith, 19, of Glen Campbell, were charged with murder, robbery and related offenses. It wasn't clear if they had attorneys.

11 parents of Nigeria's abducted girls die

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nearly a dozen parents of the more than 200 kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls will never see their daughters again.
Since the mass abduction of the schoolgirls by Islamic extremists three months ago, at least 11 of their parents have died and their hometown, Chibok, is under siege from the militants, residents report.
Seven fathers of kidnapped girls were among 51 bodies brought to Chibok hospital after an attack on the nearby village of Kautakari this month, said a health worker who insisted on anonymity for fear of reprisals by the extremists.
At least four more parents have died of heart failure, high blood pressure and other illnesses that the community blames on trauma due to the mass abduction 100 days ago, said community leader Pogu Bitrus, who provided their names.
"One father of two of the girls kidnapped just went into a kind of coma and kept repeating the names of his daughters, until life left him," said Bitrus.

How our banks pulled off the most cynical scam of all time: We all know how millions fell victim to banks selling insurance they didn't need. But this gripping inside account reveals greed so obscene it'll make your jaw drop

Six years ago, bus driver Michael Hampton decided to rent a one-bedroomed flat. There was only one problem: he needed £2,500 for a three-month deposit, and as much again to buy furniture.
So he turned to an Abbey National branch in Hertfordshire, where he’d banked for years. The loan they proposed would have to be paid back over five years, which was fine.
But Mr Hampton, 50, was also urged to take out payment protection insurance, which would cover his payments if he fell ill. This cost a hefty £43-a-month.

And there was a catch: the saleswoman at Abbey National, he said, ‘insisted that my loan application would be looked on more favourably if I took out the insurance’. Feeling he had no choice, he agreed.
It wasn’t until Mr Hampton had been paying the premium — known as PPI — for nearly five years that he learned from a TV programme that serious questions were being raised about this type of insurance. In fact, his was a classic case: his length of service as a bus driver entitled him to 26 weeks’ sick pay, so he hadn’t needed PPI at all.

Police defended the actions of a father who infamously beat a man into a 'bloody puddle' after walking in on him sexually molesting his 11-year-old son as the suspect made his first court appearance Monday.
Raymond Frolander, 18, was taken to a hospital before being taken to the closest police station, and his still-swollen face has shown very few signs of healing from the merciless beatdown he received only days ago.
Frolander was conscious, but still covered in bruises and with a swollen face as he pleaded not guilty to sexual battery on a child after he admitted to molesting the boy for years.
Beaten down: Raymond Frolander was barely recognizable in his first court appearance after the savage pounding

'That might sound awful but words cannot describe the hatred and fear I had for that woman after what she forced me to do.
‘I remained frightened of her my whole life. I regret not reporting her while she was still alive because there can be no greater act of evil for a mother than to sell the body of her own daughter.

‘Greed led me into car snatching’

Thirty-five-year-old Okewu Olayinka, a professional barber, has
revealed how the glitz and glamour of robbery world, painted by his
friend, made him decide to try his hand at robbery.
He failed woefully. He had gone for two car snatching operations,
where he and his gang members wielded guns like they were in Hollywood
a movie, and yet for all his pains and success in making away with two
cars, he did not receive a dime.
He was arrested before he got his share. He is presently in the
custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos State Police
    Command.
He said: “It was greed that led me into this! I was not satisfied with
what God gave me. I decided to join car snatching because of the way
my friend painted the world of crime and robbery. There was also how
they spent money and lived their lives. I wanted to be like them.
Today, I’m blaming myself for my predicament.

    Harvest of human parts’ dealers

    Harvest of human parts’ dealers
    • Police continue onslaught on dealers

In March, 2014, a dungeon was discovered in Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State, where kidnapped people were used for ritual purposes. The shocking discovery included 18 males and five females, looking frail, with chains on their legs. There were human skulls, bones and other parts found in the bush. There were open graves where bodies were dumped. In one of the buildings, was an abandoned factory where captives were slaughtered and sold in parts to clients.
Since the Ibadan Soka forest horror story broke, members of the Nigeria Police Force, across the nation have become more vigilant. This vigilance has paid off, particularly in Lagos State, with police detectives discovering and arresting more human parts dealers.
A police source said that the buying and selling of human parts is prevalent in areas where public cemeteries are situated. The police source added: “Areas which are not located in the metropolis and have cemeteries have become the hideout for cartels which specialise in the sales of human parts. Police have reason to believe that some of these human parts dealers also engage in ritual killing.”
The source said that efforts were on to arrest other human parts sellers in the state. In May, 2014, the Lagos State Police Command arrested a grandfather, Mr. Segun Kayode, for exhuming and selling human parts. Police said that the suspect sold human parts for a living, adding that he had become notorious in the business. The grandfather, who could not give his exact age, said he started selling human parts because he was poor and jobless. He added that selling human parts was no crime.
In May, 5, 2014, four suspects were arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos Police Command, Ikeja and they gave chilling accounts of how they used to source and sell human body parts. One of the suspects, Mrs. Sukuratu Salami, said that she used to buy each fresh human head for N10, 000 and sell for N20, 000.
According to the 53-year-old mother, human eye balls go for N5, 000 and intestines are sold at N1, 000. She confessed to have sold at least 10 heads. Salami, who sells herbs, said she decided to go into selling of human parts because there was high demand for heads by “native doctors.”
