The President of Association of Anambra State Development Unions (AASDU), Lagos State, Sir Amechi Ebeledike, has urged the governor of Anambra State, Mr Willie Obiano to take proactive measures to tame any form of insecurity, which may mar the scheduled governorship election comes November 6.
Ebeledike, who made this call at
Villa Angelia Event Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos, on Sunday, after his swearing in
ceremony as the new President of the AASDU, stressed that all political parties
and citizens should play by the rules in order to ensure peaceful and credible
election.
According to him, Anambra, as a
pacesetter State has always been ahead of other states, and often tried to show
examples as well as taking steps, which others would later emulate.
His words: “I have already sent a
message to the government of Anambra State, appealing to Governor Willie
Obiano to take proactive measures in nipping any form of crime in the bud
before damages are done. I’m also imploring the political parties, aspirants
and their supporters to make sure they go by the rules. This is family matter,
and at the end of the day, it is only one person that will emerge as the
governor, and Anambra State will remain, as well as the citizens and residents;
so there must be peace in the state. We cannot afford to have division because
of election. I’m urging our people to associate with any political party and
vote any candidate of their choice, but let there be peace. At the end of the
day, so long as it is a peaceful and credible election, whoever that emerges
must be supported. We’re praying for the emergence of the best candidate.”
The AASDU president bemoaned the
state of insecurity in Anambra and the Southeast, warning that the state or
Igbo land should not be turned into war theatre. He stated that the worrisome
insecurity challenge in the land should not be left to the police or security
agencies alone. He said civilians should also help by providing relevant
information to the security agencies to forestall further attacks.
Commenting on his programmes for
Anambra community in Lagos, he said that he was going to take the Association
to an enviable level, adding, “I can assure you that the foundation we are
laying together is going to bring about great innovations, great successes and
great improvements from what my predecessors have down. We’ll try as much as
possible give our support and show interest in what is happening in our state
and intervene whenever necessary. Our host state, Lagos, is another area of
interest. So, we must take this place as a home for us, which is a typical
philosophy of the Igbo man. Anywhere he lives, he makes that place a home. Not
just making here a home and being comfortable with our neighbours, friends and
associates, but we must make sure we go by the rules and obey the laws of the
government and its agencies, and of course, make ourselves available to them in
whatever area they need our assistance.”
