13 killed, 8 injured in road crashes

ELEVEN people died in the early hours of Saturday, while six others were injured when the commercial bus they were travelling in had a collision with a stationary truck at Asejire area, Egbeda Local Government area of Oyo State.
The Toyota Hiace bus, popularly called Hummer, with registration number XB 130 SUA, was said to be coming from Abuja and was Lagos-bound before the accident which occurred at about 4.30a.m.
Sunday Tribune gathered that FRSC’s emergency call centre number 122 was dialled by an unknown member of the public and the message was conveyed to Egbeda unit command, which FRSC officials at responded to immediately.
According to the unit commander, Egbeda unit of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr Abiodun Akinlade, the 14-passenger bus was conveying 18 passengers, adding that the driver veered off the road at Asejire, resulting in instant death of the 11 passengers.
Curiously, the driver of the vehicle was said to have escaped from the crash unhurt.
Mr Akinlade told Sunday Tribune that bodies of the dead passengers were taken to Catholic Hospital, Oluyoro, Ikire while those who sustained injuries were taken to ASVON Hospital, Gbagi, for treatment at about 5a.m.
On what could have caused the accident, Mr Akinlade said the driver was suspected to have slept off due to fatigue, causing him to veer off the road to collide with a stationary truck which was not obstructing the way.
He disclosed that the luggages of the passengers were at the unit command while his men had started calling the families of the deceased passengers through their phones that were found in the wreckage of the bus.
He added that the police were called and the accidented bus and the truck had been towed to Egbeda police station
Some of the passengers were said to be Ibadan-bound, and had less than ten minutes to diembark from the bus.
Similitary, two fatalities were recorded with two others injured in an auto accident which occurred between Oloko and Bode Saadu along Olooru-New Jebba road, Kwara State around 6.50 a.m. same day.
The accident was reported to have involved two DAF articulated vehicles with registration number XA 146 MKA and XC 632 MAG while the victims were taken to Specialist Hospital, Ilorin.
