THE Nigerian Prisons Service has said as of March 31, 2013, it has in custody 69 babies and 847 juveniles in prison formations across the country, bringing the number to a total of 916.
It stated this in a press statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Mr Ope Fatinikun, a copy of which was made available to the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday.
According to him, “the breakdown of the juveniles is as follows: Borstal Training Institution, Kaduna, Kaduna State, 428; Borstal Training Institution, Ilorin, Kwara State, 217 and Borstal Training Institution, Abeokuta, Ogun State, 202 respectively.
The release further disclosed that some female prison inmates might have brought the pregnancies of the babies to the prisons  before the commencement of their trials by courts of competent jurisdiction or as days-old babies.
Accordingly, Fatinikun said, “all the female inmates came with their pregnancies or with some day-old babies at the point of their arrests and remand in the prison custody on the order of the court.”
