About six weeks after four students of the
University of Port Harcourt were murdered by a mob in Aluu community, the
National Association of Nigerian Students, has called on the government to
release its members, who were arrested during a protest against the incident.
NANS Director of Action and Mobilisation,
South-South and South-East, Mr. Jonah Adokie, made the call on Friday during
the funeral service of one of the slain students, Lloyd Toku Mike.
Adokie expressed dissatisfaction over the manner
the government was handling the killing of their colleagues and the continued
detention of NANS members in police custody, who protested in Aluu.
He condoled with the families of Lloyd, Chiadika
Biringa, Ugonna Obuzor and Friday Elkanam.
He said, “We feel more bereaved than the parents
of the slain students and we will continue to stand by the parents of our dead
colleagues. We are not happy about the way the matter is being handled because
some of our colleagues are in detention for peacefully protesting the killing
of our colleagues.”
The parents of one of the slain students, Mr.
Steven Biringa, said he felt shattered and unfulfilled about the death of his
child, Chiadika, and his three friends by a mob.
“There is no way one will not feel bad, even the
air, the sand are feeling the same way. He (Chiadika) was somebody who had a
vision and an ambition. But we have decided to hand over everything to God. I
expect more from the state government and security agencies, at least to use
this very incident to stop such heartless killings,” he said.
