The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers,
(NUPENG), yesterday threatened to embark on a nationwide strike from
Friday this week.
That is if the Federal Government refuses to investigate and bring those soldiers that brutalised and shot at harmless Nigerian oil workers that went to picket Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) installations in Warri and Port Harcourt over anti-labour activities on Monday.
NUPENG also added that it will continue to say no to policies detrimental to the welfare of Nigerian workers.
Speaking at a media briefing the union’s battle against the management of SPDC and its alleged anti-worker activities NUPENG’s President, Comrade Achese Igwe, declared that the workers will withdraw their services from Friday this week, if government refuses to investigate and bring to book the soldiers that were drafted by the management of SPDC to brutalise the oil workers.
The oil workers’ union has also stated that the Federal Government knows what to do to stop the persistent fuel scarcity that may go beyond 2012 in the country, stressing that no oil cartel can survive in any economy of the world without the direct involvement of the government
He said “NUPENG will embark on a nationwide strike because all the crises in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria, for instance, drafting of soldiers to brutalise our members over picketing are directly linked to SPDC and the government seems to pretend that all is well in the industry whereas the oil workers are surviving at the mercy of the management of SPDC and Chevron”.
“We are not surprised that the endemic fuel scarcity in the country is a continuous process that has no end, unless the Federal Government, that knows what to do, for instance by calling on the stakeholders for a meeting and giving directive on the way out steps in.
This is because no cartel in the oil and gas industry in the world survives without the involvement of Government”, he added
