A 110-year-old woman was, last Sunday, kidnapped by unknown
gunmen from her home at Oyobru-Jesse, Idjerhe kingdom, in Ethiope West
Local Government Area of Delta State.
Mrs Otarighobe Umudjane, whose sleep was cut short by the marauders, is the mother of an American-based chartered accountant, Mr Henry Umudjane.
One of the kidnapped’s daughters, Mrs Elizabeth Oritsegbone, who disclosed the incident to newsmen in Jesse, on Tuesday, said that the kidnappers came to the house in the midnight of March 17 and dragged the aged woman through the window before whisking her away on a waiting okada.
She was said to have been taken through River Ethiope via Ahalokpe, in Okpe Local Government Area of the state.
She said that a day after the kidnap, the gunmen put a call through, demanding a ransom from one of the victim’s grandsons, Mr Philip Apete, a sapele-based businessman.
Piqued by the abominable incident, the traditional ruler of Idjerhe kingdom, Erhiekevbe 1, PNM (JP), Ovie of Idjerhe kingdom, sent some of his palace chiefs, led by Chief Mudiaga Orits Adegor, to the family of the adopted woman.
The traditional ruler, Nigerian Tribune gathered, appealed to them to remain calm, saying his palace was working closely with the police and other security agencies to ensure the victim gained her freedom.
He appealed to the kidnappers to release the woman unconditionally, considering her old age, adding that his kingdom was known for peace and should remain so.
When contacted, the new divisional police officer of Jesse town, whose name could not be ascertained as of press time, was not available to speak, but a reliable police source revealed that the police were on top of their game to rescue the aged woman from the kidnappers’ den.
