IGP Mohammed Adamu |
Operatives
of the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT)
have arrested two suspects, who allegedly specialised in armed robbery,
kidnapping and assassination in Anambra State.
The Police
disclosed that the suspects, while operating in Anambra State, reside in Asaba,
Delta State.
According to
the suspects, they have killed two persons, including one Eziudo. The gang
members confessed that it was after the killing of Eziudo that they scattered.
Some ran to Delta, others ran to Bayelsa.
When the
heat raised by Eziudo’s killing died down, the gang members that ran to Bayelsa State reorganized
and planned to attack another victim at Onitsha, Anambra State.
They were
allegedly planning the attack, when Police arrested two of them. The gang
leader was said to have escaped. The gang leader allegedly scaled a fence and
disappeared.
Those in police
custody have been singing like birds. While confessing to car snatchings, the suspects
added that the gang usually target Toyota Corolla cars.
The suspects
admitted to have snatched up to 10 cars, which they sold. According to them,
their ring leader, who is presently on the run, was in charge of disposing of the
snatched vehicles.
IRT
Operatives have recovered AK47 rifle from them and a Corolla car. One of the suspects, Daniel Obinna, 22, married
with a child, introduced himself as a bricklayer.
He finished
his secondary school in 2016 and joined a robbery gang in 2019. Before then, he
had to work his way from cultism to robbery. He joined Arobaga Cult Group
through his friend, Chidubem Moralu, who is from his village.
Obinna said:
“Chidubem and I used to drink and eat together. One day, he lured me into a
bush, where he initiated me into Arobaga Cult Group. He and other cult members
blind folded and beat me with machetes. They made me to take a blood oath that
I wouldn’t tell anyone what I had seen or what was done to me.
“They slashed
my hand with a blade and collected N100, 000 from me, which they said was for
the initiation ceremony. My mother later found out that I was involved in cultism
because the gang members were always demanding money from me. They tried to
collect my phone from me, but I had to fight them. My mom forced me to relocate
to Bayelsa, where I became a commercial cyclist.”
Obinna
explained that he would later return to his village in December 2019 and by February 2020, he went for a robbery
operation.
His words: “My
first robbery operation was at Oba in Anambra State, and that was in February
2020. We were five persons that went for the operation. There was the gang
leader, Chuma, Sunday Ekpe, Maduabu Nwakwo, Victor Akpa and I. We robbed the
car along Oba new road. The owner drove the car into a place and we followed
him. We took the car from him and handed it over to a buyer. But I didn’t know
the buyer very well. Ekpe was the person that handled the negotiation with the
buyer. The car was eventually sold for N300, 000. I was given N30, 000 as my
share. I was given a mere N30, 000 because I was a new member.”
He also
confessed that the gang has killed people fighting against them. He said that
he was arrested on the day he and other gang members were planning to snatch a
car from Okija.
