Dismissed Policeman killed ex- girlfriend for jilting him in Lagos

Taiwo Jimoh

Homicide detectives from the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos State, have launched a manhunt for a security guard, identified as Shina for allegedly shooting his girlfriend, Aishat Adedimaji, to death at the Odogunyan, Ikorodu area of the metropolis.

Shina and Adedimaji, 28, had been dating for years until last year when the lovers parted ways. After the end of the relationship, Adedimaji started dating another guy, Rasheed Owomoyo, in the same neighbourhood as Shina. Unfortunately, Shina was not happy with the fact that Adedimaji had moved on.

According to neighbours, Shina is a dismissed policeman, but nobody knew why he was kicked out of the Force. However, after leaving the Force, he joined the Oodua People's Congress (OPC). He would later be kicked out of OPC for allegedly stealing. After leaving OPC, he joined Onyabo Vigilante Group in Ikorodu, and was then posted to Odogunyan area to guard a street.

Adedimaji was killed at a guest house, located at white House, bus stop, along Ita Oloja Odogunyan area of Ikorodu. He was killed after Shina trailed her and Owomoyo to a guest house.

A resident, Mr. Moruf Ademola, said: “The lady was dating Shina until they fell apart. The lady went on to start dating another guy, but Shina was not happy seeing her dating another guy. Each time he sees her with her new lover, he would assault and threaten to deal with her and the new boyfriend. On March 22, Aishat and her new boyfriend went to a guest house to relax at about 6pm. Shina, who knew they were in the hotel, hid outside and waited for them to come out. Immediately the lovers stepped out and moved towards Owomoye’s car, Shina jumped out and confronted them. He asked Owomoye why he brought his ‘wife’ to a hotel. Just as Aishat was saying she was no more dating Shina, he brought out his service pistol and shot her on the chest. I was made to understand that Shina wanted to shoot Owomoye, but the bullet got Aishat. When Shina realised what he had done, he ran away.”

Ademola said that the suspect had been on the run since he committed the crime. He said that the police had also been making efforts to arrest him.

Another resident in the community, Mr James Shobayo, said: “On that fateful day, I saw two men arguing. I thought they were arguing about football. Before I knew what was happening, I heard gunshot. I rushed out to check what was happening and saw a lady in a pool of blood. She had been shot dead. Everybody came out to assist the victim, but unfortunately she died on the spot. The man that shot her escaped.”

Shobayo further added: "The owner of the hotel also made effort to rush her to hospital, but she had already given up the ghost. It was an unfortunate incident. The corpse was later evacuated by Policemen from Sagamu Police Station. I have not witnessed such a thing before.”

A resident of the area, who doesn't want her name mentioned, said; “It was jealousy that made Shina to kill his former lover. It was on a Sunday that it happened; I was in my room sleeping. I suddenly heard people at a beer parlour, shouting that someone has killed a lady. I rushed out only to find the lady in a pool of blood. She was already dead. I was told the suspect and the deceased had dated each other before they parted and that she got another boyfriend. I don't understand why he killed her. He wasted her out of jealousy. The lady’s new boyfriend was just crying at the scene.”

Adedimaji friend, who identified herself as Itunu, revealed that her late friend jilted Shina because of his excessive jealousy.

She said: “Whenever Shina sees any man with Aishat, he would get angry. He would beat and accuse her of cheating on him. It was when she couldn't bear it anymore that she left him. But since Aishat left Shina, he had not allowed her to rest. He trailed her everywhere. It was unfortunate that we lost her because she was a generous person and friendly. I’m going to miss her. She was my gist partner. I want police to arrest and bring the suspect to book. I don't know what her parents would be going through right now. I want justice for her; I don't want her to die in vain.

The owner of the guest house, Hassan Olanukan, said: “The lovers are regular customers, but on that fateful day, after taking some drinks, they left for their car. I was inside when I suddenly heard a gunshot. I rushed outside and saw the woman lying on the ground. I held the person that came to the club with her until the Police came to arrest him. The person that shot the girl, is a security guard employed to watch over the community. He ran away after committing the crime. He wore a top with the inscription, ‘Onyabo Vigilante Group.’ We have confirmed that he is a member of the group. I even went to their base, but he was nowhere to be found."

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Bala Elkana, said the case was under investigation.

He added: “We have been able to arrest two people in connection with the crime and we are also going after the perpetrator of the crime. The remains of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary.”
