Lagos police impound 2,000 Okada daily

There are strong indications that about 2000 commercial motorcycles, also known as Okada, are being impounded daily by police officers in various parts of Lagos State.

Our correspondent, who visited some police stations last week, observed that 20 motorcycles were brought to the stations by police officers detailed to enforce the traffic law enacted by the Lagos State government.

A total of 25 motorcycles were parked at the Ilupeju Police station on Thursday, while three were impounded by police officers attached to the Mosafejo Police station, Oshodi, on the same day.

At Isokoko and Pen Cinema Police stations in Agege area of the state, more than 30 motorcycles were sighted by our correspondent.

A police source at Isokoko said the high rate of seized motorcycles at the two stations in Agege could be attributed to the huge presence of Hausa commercial motorcyclists in the area.

Our Correspondent further gathered that there had been an influx of commercial motorcycle operators in areas such as Victoria Island and Ikoyi in Lagos.

A police source at the Bar Beach Police Station told our correspondent that since Victoria Island is largely 70% commercial and 30% residential area, some motorcyclists, therefore, see it as good for business.

A journey on Okada from the CMS Bus stop to Bar Beach, which used to cost N200, now goes for N500, while the fare has risen from N400 to N600 from Obalende to Shaw Road in Ikoyi, though it depends on the bargaining power of the passenger.
Adegoke Fayoade, a Chief Superintendent of Police and Divisional Police Officer of Bar Beach Police station was not available , when our correspondent visited the station.

However, a police source said Fayoade is the one personally leading the operations to impound Okada in compliance with the traffic law.

Speaking on the issue, Ngozi Braide, the Lagos State Police image maker, confirmed the figures, saying , “there are 98 police divisions and all the divisions are effectively enforcing the law.”

She, however, warned police officers and soldiers to desist from flouting the law, as their motorcycles could also be impounded when caught.
