A Federal High Court sitting in Enugu has ordered that
prominent Enugu Lawyer, Barrister Christian Chukwudozie Ebuzoeme be remanded in
prison custody till November 21 pending the hearing of his bail application.
The accused was arraigned before Justice Mohammed
Shuaibu by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on November 15,
2012 on a four count charge bordering on intent to obtain money by false
pretence.
The accused and his accomplice, one Amaechi Okoye who
is still at large, allegedly swindled unsuspecting members of the public
through a phony investment scheme. They, in contravention of banking rules,
floated a company, Karchack Services Limited in New Haven, Enugu through which
they solicited and received deposits from members of the public with promise of
mouth watery returns to the investors.
When the charge was read to Ebuzoeme, he pleaded not
guilty, prompting prosecution counsel, Johnson Ojogbane to pray the court to
fix a date for the commencement of trial. But defence counsel J.O. Agha moved a
motion for bail, urging the court to admit his client to bail on the same terms
which the EFCC had offered him an administrative bail.
Justice Shuaibu however rejected the oral application
and adjourned the case to November 21, 2012 for hearing of the bail
application.
