Parties crisis: IG summons Ekiti police boss

Sotonye

Indications emerged yesterday from the Force Headquarters that the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar has summoned the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Sotonye Wakama to explain the Command's role in the political crisis that has engulfed the state.

The action of the IGP would be hinged on the petition sent to his office by the National Leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Ekiti State Police Command.

Also, the former governor of Ekiti State, Chief Ayo Fayose had last week visited the IGP where he made a verbal complain and buttressed the petition of the party on the attacks of his supporters and his party, PDP in the state by the ACN and the Ekiti State Police Command.

Fayose had chronicled all that had happened to him and his party in Ekiti State to the IGP since he was formally received back to the party.

According to a source at the Force Headquarters, Fayose had shown to the IGP all the correspondents of his party and his with the Ekiti State Police Command, yet the command had allegedly failed  to protect him or his party against attacks from ACN-led government in the state.

The petition, sent to the office of the IGP by the office of the PDP National Secretary, was an explanation provided by former governor of Ekiti state to the Ekiti State Police Commissioner in response to his letter to him.

The Ekiti CP, Sotonye Wakama had on 30th October written to Fayose informing him that no permit had been granted to him or his party for any political visit.

He said in the letter, "For the avoidance of doubt and the need for clarity, above letter referred to the Police Command was not responded to. No permit of any hue or description was issued your office, person or party from this Command. The Command out of respect and regard for your stature as a former governor of Ekiti State merely informed its officers of your visit".

In his response to the CP letter, Fayose, in his letter dated November 1st chronicled the correspondence of his party and that of his office with the Command.

He said in one of the paragraphs, "My Commissioner of Police should please visit letters to me and our party dated 17th October by Command to avoid contradicting yourself because you actually approved of the said party activities and meetings".

Also he highlighted the deliberate error made by the Command by allowing ACN to hold meetings in the same areas they were holding meetings.

He said, "It is just that Police should not allow two political parties to have functions at the same place at the same time. Please allow us to believe you are not only going to be fair but be seen as fair to all concerned to allow democracy to survive in Ekiti State under your leadership and avoid blood letting". The CP will appear at the Force Headquarters this week.

Meanwhile, the PDP yesterday reiterated its commitment to henceforth give its tickets to politicians who had performed in their previous positions.

The party stated this in statement in which it commended the smooth transfer of Deputy Governor's power in Akwa Ibom State.

The former Deputy Governor, Obong Nsima Ekere had last week resigned, while the state government and the PDP appointed Mrs. Valerie Ebe as replacement.

The national leadership of the PDP, while commenting on this,  commended the leadership of its Akwa Ibom State chapter for the smooth transition that heralded the emergence of the new Deputy Governor.

The statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh said, "the Party was happy with the manner the transition was completed with least acrimony and urged other state chapters to borrow a leaf.

"The import of this is that the faithful delivery of the Party's electoral promises in the state will not be impeded by such a change. Our leadership is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that all members in various positions of authority meet up with the Party's performance target as a critical element to its victory  in future elections.

"The leadership of our party guides jealously, the performance target we have set for all our members elected into various positions of authority.

"We are quietly monitoring to ensure compliance. There is no doubt that the facts available to us will be basic to our decisions at the time of reckoning. We will certainly settle for nothing but credible performance.

"It is in this wise that we commend the action of the former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Nsima Ekere who resigned last week for personal reasons. We think it is wise. We also think he has taken a good decision. Besides, we view it as democracy in action. The essentials of public stewardship demand that personal  interests and reasons be relegated so that the common interest of all shall thrive.

"The largely unsung feature of the fourteen years of democracy  under the PDP is the unshackled freedom it has vested on the polity. Beyond the sanctity of the electoral choices of the people, issues bordering on personal choice and the freedom to espouse such a choice is an integral value in democracy under the PDP. Our Party shall continue to encourage this.

"We therefore recommend as worthy of emulation the unabridged democratic process which the Governor of the State, Chief Godswill Akpabio and the leadership of our Party in Akwa Ibom Ibom  State engaged  in handling the resignation and the emergence of the new Deputy Governor of the State.

"Central is the conscientiousness of Governor Akpabio and leadership of our Party in the State who allowed democratic values to guide its decisions in running the affairs of the state.

"We are particularly encouraged by the leadership style which has accommodated all spheres of opinion and the people of the state irrespective of personal political persuasions as a cardinal article of governance. It is instructive that the former Deputy Governor made reference to this in his resignation letter.

This ought to be emulated."
The statement further congratulated the new Deputy Governor on her appointment and enjoined her to complement the efforts of the Governor in implementing the manifesto of  the Party in the state.
