Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery
Squad (SARS), Ikeja, Lagos State Command, have arrested a 19-year-old, who
allegedly specialized in robbing motorists in traffic.
The suspect, Adewumi Sodiq, was arrested
along Oshodi, Mushin road, Lagos State on 19th of January.
Allegedly recovered from the suspect is
one cut to size locally made pistol, with three live cartridges. The police
also claimed that the suspect was arrested right inside the car of a victim he
was attempting to rob.
According to the Lagos State
Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, the arrest was made after the command
received a tip-off about the suspect’s activities.
His words: “The Command received
information that some armed robbers were sighted inside a Volkswagen Golf
Saloon Car, painted Lagos State commercial colour. Our men quickly raced to the
scene. The hoodlums, on sighting the operatives, quickly jumped down and took
to their heels, leaving one of their members behind. The suspect was arrested
and during investigation, he was to his house for a search. Police discovered another
cut to size locally made single barrel gun with three live cartridges. This
brings the total number of locally made guns recovered from him to two, while recovered
cartridges are four.
Imohimi disclosed that the suspect
during interrogation allegedly confessed that he was a member of a gang of
robber that had been terrorising Mushin and its environs.
Imohimi
said that the command also arrested five suspects for allegedly burgling a rice
ship, located along Imota Agbowa Road, Ikorodu Lagos on the 15th of
December 2018.
“The
armed men were operating with a white colour Mazda Bus. When the suspects
sighted a combined team of SARS operatives and policemen from Igbogbo Police
Station, the hoodlums immediately opened fire, forcing our policemen to
respond,” said Imohimi.
The
suspects were said to have fled because they couldn’t face the superior gun
battle from the police. One of the suspects, Yusuf Nasiru, was arrested.
The
CP disclosed that Nasiru surrendered to the police. He added that a locally
made double barrel gun and six live cartridges were recovered from him.
The
suspect was used as bait to catch other fleeing members of the gang identified
as Adeneye Ayomide Alias a.k.a ‘Dublin’ (39), who is the leader of the
hoodlums, Tope Faleye a.k.a ‘Eniba’ (25), Dare Rasaq (28) and Oshibajo Gbenga
(21). The Mazda bus, marked KRD-783-XW, was recovered from them.
