OGUN
State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC),
on Thursday, arrested 18 public secondary school students for alleged
cultism and breach of peace.
Those arrested were reported to be students of Nazareth High School, Imeko Afon and Lisabi High School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, the state capital.
The Public Relations Officer of the corps, Kareem Olanrewaju, disclosed this to newsmen in Abeokuta.
Seven of the students were said to have been arrested while initiating new members into the cult, while 11 others were arrested in Abeokuta.
Olanrewaju said, “These seven students of Nazareth were arrested within the school premises while they were initiating new members into cultism by making incision on their bodies.
“We also arrested 11 others of Lisabi High School for conducting themselves in a way that breached peace in the school.
“We will not charge them to court because of their age, as they are underaged and cannot be prosecuted, but the command will meet with the Ministry of Education in the state to decide what to do them.
“We observed that they have been misguided, and now that they have been caught , there is need to guide them aright.
“We want government to introduce civic education in secondary schools curricula so as to reduce the level of vices among the youth.
“We have discovered in the course of our investigation that parents are not contributing enough to better the future of their children, rather they have devoted much of the time to other things.”
