Land scam: Teachers accuse law maker of defrauding them N4m

Juliana Francis
A group of teachers have accused a member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Honourable Adebayo Muhammed of defrauding them N4million under false pretence.

Muhammed, representing Malete/Ipuru Constituency in the state's house of assembly is alleged to have sometime in 2015 sold some plots of land which did not belong to him to a group of teachers, and issued receipts to the buyers in the name of a non-existent company. It was further alleged that he has so far resisted all attempts by his victims to recover their money.
The complainants have been identified as Mary Kolade, Ezekiel Babatunde, Felicia Adebiyi, Grace Awolola, Julius Omole and Abiodun Balogun.
The complainants alleged that Muhammed sold plots of land to them, which he claimed to be the owner but that they later discovered that the land belonged to the Federal Ministry of Land and Housing.
One of the complainants noted: "After paying about N4m to the lawmaker, we decided to carry out survey on the plots of land, so as to put our survey number in the Deed of Transfer between him and us, only to discover through the officials of the Kwara State Ministry of Land and Housing that the said plots of land belonged to the Federal Ministry of Land and Housing. Other people who also wanted to develop the plots of land he sold to them were equally barred from constructing anything on it.”
The EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, while reacting to the incident, disclosed that  Muhammed would soon be charged to court.
In another development, Justice S.O. Solebo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, yesterday convicted and sentenced Yusuf Olatunji to three years imprisonment for N9m fraud.
The convict was arraigned on Monday, on a five-count charge bordering stealing, impersonation, forgery and use of forged documents to the tune of N9m.
One of the counts reads: "That you, Yusuf Olatunji, sometime in June, 2014, at Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division, dishonestly cashed and converted to your own use Guarantee Trust Bank Cheque number 5782 in the sum of N9, 000,000.00, the property of Joshua Babatunde Johnson, thereby committed stealing contrary to Section 285 (9) (b) and (c) of Criminal Law of Lagos State."
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was remanded in Kirikiri prison custody.
Consequently, Justice Solebo adjourned to May 9, 2019 (today) for judgment. Delivering her judgment, Justice Solebo sentenced the defendant to one year imprisonment on counts one and two for stealing, and three years on counts three to five for impersonation, forgery and use of forged documents.
