NDLEA arrests two, recovers N20m cannabis

Taiwo Jimoh
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos State Command, have arrested two persons and recovered drugs suspected to be Cannabis Sativa worth N20million concealed in a truck compartment.

The suspects, Monday Michael, the driver of the truck and Alex Adieli, the motor boy, were arrested on May 3.
Their truck, marked JJJ959XN, loaded with 150 bags of the illicit drug, was intercepted on their way to Ondo State.
The acting state commander, Barrister Frederick Ezeorah, said that the arrest of the suspects came as a result of intelligence gathered over a period of time on the criminal activities of the suspects. He disclosed that the suspects specialised in bringing such illicit substance into Lagos State.
The suspects, during interrogation, admitted to the crime, adding that he had been dealing in the illegal business for years now without being caught until now.
He appealed to NDLEA to forgive and allow him to go, promising to desist from the business.
Ezeorah further said: “The consequence of the trafficking in illicit drugs and abuse of dangerous substance must be the concern of every well-meaning Nigerian, if the drugs find its way into the market the effect knows no bound and anybody could be a victim of its dangerous health and mental implications, violence and its associated crimes.
"The NDLEA would continue to work assiduously by consolidating on the gains recorded in the fight against insurgency and other crimes.
“Over 2.139 tons of cannabis would have been taken to Lagos if not for the timely interception by men of this command. Several crimes are perpetrated under the influence of drugs like cannabis and the Agency will not rest until the problem of cannabis cultivation, trafficking and usage are drastically reduced “.
He, however, said NDLEA Lagos Command has declared a total war against illicit drugs and we are going to deploy adequate resources towards monitoring, interception and arrest of dealers and consumers of drugs.
