The Lagos State Commissioner for Police, Zubairu
Muazu, has announced plan of the command to introduce a day, during which
families and friends of detainees can visit them.
According to Muazu, the day would witness the
visitors interacting with suspects, who are in police cells.
Speaking at the workshop/ seminar ogranised for
Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Area command chairmen and
Divisional Police Officers’ on community policing delivery in Lagos, powered by
Nigeria Policing Programme (NPP), Muazu, said that the introduction of the
visiting day would create mutual relationship between the police and
community.
Muazu further said: “The visiting day, people will
visit the police stations and talk to the suspects in the cells. To find out
what actually brought them into the cells, if the Divisional Headquarters
Officers raided innocent citizens, just to collect money from them for bail.
“I believe such measures will help the police to be
transparency in their dealing with the general public. Also, it will help the
police to gain their trust with the people. I appealed to stakeholders to
continue to support the force for effective and efficiney policing in the
state,” he said.
The guest speaker, Chairman, Lagos Neighbourhood
Safety Agency (LNSA), Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police DIG Israel
Ajao, who spoke on community policing in a cosmopolitan city: low
handing fruits and challenges, said that his office is an example of community
policing, where individuals partner with traditional police force like the
conventional police to reduced crime and make their neighborhood safer.
"Community policing brings police and citizens
together to prevent crime and solve neighborhood problems. With community
policing, the emphasis is on stopping crime before it happens, not responding
to distress calls after they occur. Community policing gives citizens more
control over the quality of life in their community, “he said.
Ajao further said that the community policing makes
effective use of the talents and resources available within the communities,
allowing the police to utilized available resources to solve other problems of
law enforcement.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Lagos State Police
Community Relations Committee, Apostle Kehinde Adewale Showemimo, said that the
very important necessities of every community is peace and tranquility which is
the foundation for any meaningful development and progress in a society.
He commanded the police and LNSC efforts in fighting
crime in the state.
