Bleak Xmas for plank dealers as fire destroys market in Lagos

Juliana Francis

It’s likely going to be a less cherry Xmas for plank dealers at the Jakande Plank Market, Isolo area of Lagos State, following an early morning inferno, which swept across the market, destroying property worth millions of naira.

Although the cause of the fire is unknown, people at the scene alleged power surge.

It was gathered that three trucks from Lagos State fire fighters arrived at the scene 30 minutes after the fire started. It was said that by then, property had been damaged.

Before the arrival of the fire fighters, some of the plank dealers and sympathisers battled to stop the fire, but it was a futile battle.

According to eyewitnesses’ accounts, several items were carted away by hoodlums, who pretended to be assisting in arresting the escalating fire.

It was also heard that Policemen from Ejigbo Police Station arrested one of the hoodlums, while he was trying to cart away some of the goods that were salvaged from the fire.
